About

“This is the Perio Hygienist Podcast – a podcast centered on the intersection between the specialty of Periodontics and the profession of Dental Hygiene…”

General Dentists, Dental Hygienists and Periodontists all perform critical roles in the treatment and management of patients with chronic periodontitis.

Periodontists are focused on treating disease in the “Active Periodontal Therapy” phase of care.

General Dentists are focused on monitoring and managing occlusion, maintaining restorations that wear and treating dental caries (including more potential root caries due to teeth surviving longer).

Dental Hygienists are the professionals generally assigned to providing the bulk of Supportive Periodontal Therapy for patients – but this is because they provide hygiene services for everyone. When asked, many will tell you that they get precious little support from dentists in this area – especially the periodontists who work in some other office.

The purpose of this podcast, written and produced by a periodontist with unique subject matter expertise, is to simplify care and enable the smooth and comfortable transfer of patients between the providers. Because everyone finally knows and understands the problems and challenges from the perspective of the others involved, the quality of patient care can improve profoundly. This can result in more case sharing, more patient satisfaction and less operator frustration.
